Baskets
When did this start?
I had been telling people that I started making baskets during early 2020 - a new direction during the pandemic. Then, in October, I did a talk for Middlebury College’s Environmental Studies Department Woodin Colloquium, in which I described what I have made over the past 25 years or so, and I discovered that I have been making baskets since the mid 1990s. I had been thinking of them as vessels, but they were still basically baskets - woven forms with some holding capacity, real or implied.
I love this. I love how we see things differently over time, how materials evolve and definitions shift. This is what my work is about, really, and maybe that’s why I am having so much fun playing with basket forms these days.
